Session Zero, or Session 0, is the first session of a series of sessions, usually called a campaign, and involves the setup and initial communication. It means we sit together and discuss the rules involved, the kind of story or stories we want to explore, gameplay features, themes to show and to avoid, and more.
It lets the Game Master get to know you, help build your character and the game to fit around them.
We would sit together as we would for Session 1 or 2 afterwards, but rather than diving straight into the game we engage in a guided conversation where you have the opportunity to lay out your expectations, ask any questions, and meet your fellow players to discuss team dynamics and story elements.
If we feel as though we have accomplished everything needed to begin, and there’s still time, I usually suggest diving straight into Session 1 at the end of Session Zero to help showcase what we’ve just gone through and see if any changes are to be made.
Rest assured that anything discussed in Session Zero can be amended at any time. If you say you’re comfortable with jet-packs and flamethrowers but then decide you’d rather avoid those at all costs now, no matter the reason we can change that and remove all references to jet-packs and flamethrowers in future sessions. It’s not a straight-jacket.
